What is soft roof washing?
How do you soft roof wash?
We use a soft washing system made up of solution tanks and low pressure pumps to gently clean and rinse your home using minimal pressure. Our cleaning solutions are comprised of mildew-cides, algae-cides and soaps. The reason we use our custom made soft washing system is twofold. First, using a pressure washer on a home is dangerous. The brute force approach can lead to siding damage and water infiltration among other things. The other reason we use our systems is efficiency. We can clean a house better and quicker all while using less water in the process.
Cleaning a home properly is not about how much pressure you can use; it’s about using the proper cleaners with the proper procedures to clean it.
What is soft roof washing?
Soft washing is a term that is becoming much more commonly used in the pressure washing and roof cleaning industries. It simply means to clean a given exterior using a much softer amount of pressure than most would traditionally associate with a pressure washing company. In fact, most of the exterior cleaning services performed by today’s professionals would fall under the soft washing umbrella. The reason that the term pressure washing is still so widely used has more to do with its industry term recognition than anything. My definition of soft washing is to clean an exterior using 400 psi or less.
Pressure Washing and Power Washing can and will damage soft surfaces such as wood, paint, vinyl and shingles if not done correctly.
Softwashing is gentle and non abrasive yet highly effective. We use a custom made softwashing system comprised of chemical solution tanks and “low pressure” pumps to clean and rinse at minimal pressures. There are no pressure washers used in our softwashing systems.
Different surfaces require different levels of “soft washing”. For instance, the proper way the clean a roof is to use low, or what many refer to as “non pressure roof cleaning”. Well, if water is coming out of the hose, or wand, there is some pressure, but the non pressure term is more to stress the point that the surface is receiving almost no agitation what so ever during the cleaning process. So technically this would still classify as soft washing.
In today’s pressure washing markets, just about anybody who does this professionally and has the skills, equipment, and know how, will be cleaning most surfaces using a soft wash approach. There are, however, exceptions where using a bit more pressure is acceptable. Mainly these exceptions are limited to brick, concrete or masonry type surfaces, but even then the pressure is just part of the equation; the cleaning solutions are the real story.
Soft washing is possible via the extraordinary power of chemistry. Today there are many high quality cleaning compounds that are available to aid in cleaning just about any surface. A quality professional in the pressure washing or roof cleaning trade will have a good working knowledge of many different kinds of cleaning solutions and how to safely and effectively use them in the soft washing process.

Power Washing vs Soft Washing
Problem – Power washing or pressure washing is the use of high pressure water to remove mold, algae, lichen, moss, and other contaminants from a surface. It will produce enough pressure to cause significant damage to any surface including concrete, stone and brick. High pressure power washing machines, even small electric power washers, can cause serious, irreversible damage when not used properly.
Solution – Specialized Accessories & Techniques have been developed to create what is called Soft Washing or Soft Wash. This involves the use of a variety of cleaning solutions to lift and remove the contaminants from siding, roofing and paving materials. The process consists of applying a cleaning solution & then rinsing away the unwanted material while using only LOW PRESSURE. The low pressure is similar to that of a garden hose. Black streaks or black roof stains don’t stand a chance against a good soft wash.
